Applied Behavior Analysis - Three Part Series

Behavior Vets is offering a 3-part webinar series on Applied Behavior Analysis. These webinars can be viewed as stand-alone webinars or will complement one another if you choose to view all three.

There are currently no Continued Education Units (CEUs) being offered at this time.

Part 1: What is Applied Behavior Analysis... Really?

Psychology, Vet Behavior, ABA... oh my!!

There are many models from which a professional can analyze and study animal behavior. Psychology, veterinary behavior, and applied behavior analysis provide professionals different technologies for gathering information and creating plans that will alleviate animal suffering.Psychology, Vet Behavior, ABA... oh my!!
There are many models from which a professional can analyze and study animal behavior. Psychology, veterinary behavior, and applied behavior analysis provide professionals different technologies for gathering information and creating plans that will alleviate animal suffering.
It’s often the case that these lenses seem to contradict each other and professionals across areas of expertise misunderstand each other’s perspectives. This hinders their ability to work together for the betterment of their mutual clients. For example, did you know that Applied Behavior Analysis takes emotions into account? We’ll go over that! In this webinar, you’ll learn what ABA is, how ABA single subject design differs from the group design of psychology and veterinary research, and how these three disciplines complement each other.

Applied behavior analysis is a science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for behavior change. In this webinar, participants will learn what applied behavior analysis is, how ABA single subject design differs from the group design of psychology and veterinary research, and how these three disciplines complement each other.

Participants will come away with an understanding of the history and development of applied behavior analysis, the different types of behaviorism and their philosophical underpinnings, the difference between the psychology model, medical model, and applied behavior analysis model, and a new way of looking at and analyzing behavior.

Part 2: Throw out the Quadrants...

Everything I wish I knew 5 years ago.

The four quadrants are frequently taught as the foundation of learning theory and are the single most misunderstood unit of applied behavior analysis.
Don’t you wish the quadrants were easier to understand and apply within the context of modern day training and behavior modification? Well they can be but we first have to forget everything we thought we knew and forget how we were taught… join us to discover a new up to date interdisciplinary approach. This interactive lecture will turn your understanding upside down and then right-side up again. If you are confused about the quadrants or want to understand why behavior happens, you won’t want to miss this.

The way the four quadrants are traditionally taught creates immediate confusion and sets the learner up for misunderstandings as they learn advanced concepts and begin to apply their new knowledge. This webinar approaches the topic differently and instead teaches the four basic contingencies; reinforcement, escape, punishment, and penalty and the four functions of behavior; attention, access, escape, and sensory.

Interspersed throughout lecture material, participants will play an interactive quiz game with the presenter in order to hone their skills and gain true mastery of the concepts. Through this process participants will learn to look at units of behavior and identify the controlling function of that behavior.

Part 3: From the Lab to the Street - The Constructional Approach & Animal Welfare

Get ready for a deeper understanding of the applied part of applied behavior analysis. What does the errorless learning model, the constructional approach, or complex contingencies have to do with animal welfare? Discover how ABA and Animal Welfare Science intersect so that you can create evidence-based behavior intervention plans that work for human and animal clients alike. Bring your coffee, because in the last part of this three part series we’re going to geek out and turn complex concepts into action steps.
This lecture builds on the last. In the final section of this three part series, we’ll move from the smallest unit of behavior analysis to what behavior looks like in real life. Advanced concepts will expand on existing knowledge to allow participants to think not only about simple training paradigms but also advance behavior intervention.

Participants will be introduced to complex contingencies (avoidance of an aversive, avoidance of loss, cued avoidance, continuous-response avoidance, non-cued avoidance, avoidance of an aversive condition, avoidance of loss of a reinforcer, punishment by prevention-of-removal, and punishment by prevention-of-a-reinforcer), concurrent contingencies, the sick social cycle, functional assessment, the constructional approach, and the overlap between applied behavior analysis and welfare science.

We’ll also expand upon where the veterinary team fits into this model and how veterinarians can help alter establishing operations so the pet can learn new skills.
Interspersed throughout lecture material, participants will play an interactive quiz game with the presenter in order to hone their skills and gain true mastery of the concepts. Through this process participants will learn to look at larger units of behavior and identify the multiple controlling functions of that behavior or group of behaviors.

Lauren Novack, ACDBC

Lauren Novack, ACDBC, who has completed all of her coursework for her MS ABA including 360 hours of supervised applied work in the field. She is currently working on her thesis which will be completed in 2021. In addition to her work in ABA she has taken coursework in the MA Animal Behavior program at Hunter College. She works hands-on with behavior cases in conjunction with Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorists and residents at Behavior Vets NYC where she holds a leadership position. She sits on the Editorial Advisory Board for Daily Paws of the Meredith Corporation along with other leaders in the field.
Lauren Novack is an Associate Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and Family Paws Parent Educator who is also certified in Pet First Aid and CPR. She is currently a MS Candidate in Applied Behavior Analysis at Hunter College where her current research projects seek to identify the relationship between tangible preference assessments and reinforcer effectiveness (ie: how to quickly identify reinforcers that are not food), and to examine the influence of training methodology on companion animal welfare.

Lauren founded Lauren’s Leash 2011, a private manners and behavior dog training service which she operated in Manhattan through 2018. Through her work with private clients she’s developed unique training procedures aimed at preventing and modifying problem behaviors commonly seen in NYC’s pet population. She works with each unique dog and human duo to identify why unwanted behaviors are happening before designing an evidence-based behavior intervention program that is both effective and practical for real life application.

Lauren's television appearances include Fox & Friends, Fox5 NY, Fox Philadelphia, and Rachel Ray. Lauren has taught seminars and appeared on panels at zoos and rescue organizations and regularly contributes to articles on various online platforms and print media including Broadway Barks, NY Mag, Chewy.com, BarkPost, The DoDo, This Dogs Life, SheKnows, Women’s Day, MaevWorld, iHeartDogs, and The Meaning of Woof.

Lauren lives in the center of Manhattan with one rescued mixed breed pup (Grayson), one cat (Maui) and one husband. In the rare moments when she’s not working or studying, she enjoys exploring Manhattan’s culinary landscape with them all.

Outside of international competitions, Lauren’s local, national and international students from live classes, seminars, and online classes have achieved great success with a variety of breeds, including championship titles, national finals appearances, top-five finishes in their breed, Invitational appearances, and more! Lauren uses positive reinforcement, motivational games, and shaping to build brilliant behaviors while teaching the handlers to be consistent and positive in their handling and dog training.
